Re-enrolled for the Franco-German War, General Vinoy (1800-1880) succeeded Trochu on January 22, 1871 as commander-in-chief of the Paris army. On March 11, he suppressed the revolutionary newspapers; on March 18, obeying Thiers, he ordered the general retreat to Versailles. He lead the army of Versailles until April 14, when Thiers replaced him with Mac Mahon, appointing him Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour instead.
